In reality, the message wasn’t quite that blatant. But it may as well have been. Maria Turfler fondly recalls growing up in Brooklyn as part of a large, supportive family. But what she remembers most is taking the subway into Manhattan with her grandmother – a pioneering businesswoman who founded a garment business – and watching her interact and negotiate with fellow garment industry businesspeople. This was in an era in which women were rarely found in the workplace, but Maria’s grandmother was an astute, successful woman who defied convention and always remained ahead of the curve.
"Needless to say, I learned a lot from her," Maria says today. "She allowed me to see that I could be a strong, capable woman and be a loving mother, too. Those experiences had a very big influence on me."

Carpe Diem
Not one to let such a significant life lesson go to waste, Maria never lost sight of the vision her grandmother instilled in her. She seized opportunity wherever it presented itself, whether it was accepting leadership roles in high school, being named Miss Middletown 1971 or later, entering the work place herself and raising her two children.
When a cross-country move brought her to Scripps Ranch in 1980, Maria applied the business and marketing savvy she had accumulated over the years and quickly established herself as one of San Diego County’s leading real estate professionals. She was ahead of the curve as one of the first agents to capitalize on the power of personal marketing to generate exposure for her listings. And although much has changed and the area has grown dramatically since she entered the business, Maria remains a true pioneer in the industry.
